Oil storage tanks, some with capacities of more than 390,000 barrels (more than 16 million gallons), store crude oil, intermediate stocks (partially refined), finished products, and chemicals. To avert soil and water pollution, containment areas must be designed to hold their capacities in the event of a tank rupture.
